Time and Material Management
Time Management
Agenda As mentioned previously, the day's agenda will always be posted in a visible location so that students always have access to it. The agenda will show when students will be doing what, and for how long. This will be a great way for students to learn to keep track of the time, and to minimize confusion about the day's learning and activities. Scheduled Bathroom Breaks There will be at least two scheduled bathroom breaks during the school day. One will be in the morning once all of the students arrive and have unloaded their belongings, but before Morning Meeting. The second will be sometime after lunch. The agenda will account for time to have the bathroom breaks so that minimal instructional time is wasted from many students having to go to the bathroom throughout the day. Transitions Smooth transitions will be needed to make the class activities occur fluidly and with minimal chaos. The faster and more effectively the class as a whole can transition from one activity to another, the more instructional time the class will have to learn new things. Smooth transitions can be used through songs, silent signals, and help from the viewing the agenda and knowing what the day will bring. Material Management Filing and Storage I will have plenty of storage around the room for the different materials needed throughout the year. I will also have plenty of filing cabinets to organize the many papers, and materials that will no doubt accumulate throughout the years. I would like my materials to be organized by subject, and all in one spot so that everything I need is easily accessible. Supply Table This will be a common place where students can get the necessary materials for various activities. There will be a sharpener for dull pencils, as well as extra sharpened pencils. There will also be crayons, markers, colored pencils, scissors, and glue always readily available for use. This table will be a test of student responsibility; not taking materials that they don't need, and keeping them so others can't use them. Additionally, this gives students more autonomy in the classroom, and eliminates constant questions for materials and supplies. Cubbies Each student will receive his or her own cubby (or at leas their own hook if the room does not have cubbies). This will provide the students with a place to keep their personal belongings for the day where they are easily accessible to students when needed, but out of the way during the day so as not to cause distraction during instructional time. Cubbies also help to give the students a sense of security and routine because their belongings will go in the same spot each day when they come into the room, and this is their spot for the year. Student Mailboxes There will be a spot in the room for student mailboxes. Each student will have his or her individual mailboxes. This is where I will pass back papers and projects. Students will know to empty their mailboxes each day before they leave. |
